What I’m watching on telly

Let’s be honest, xenomorphs have been done to death — but this felt fresh and original, very singular in its tone, particularly once the action shifts to Neverland, the tropical island. The alien eyeball is a fascinating, thought-provoking monster — ingenious.

Who knew you could have nineties grunge on the closing credits of a sci-fi show? Not me. I fear the writers may have painted themselves into a corner for season two… Hopefully not!

(On Disney Plus.)

My enjoyment of SMALL PROPHETS was possibly coloured by hearing Mackenzie Crook talking about it on set — but it’s a really imaginative, well-acted, heartwarming show. There’s something endlessly pleasing about talented actors playing a preposterous concept as if it’s really happening to them — that will never get old.

Loved the stop motion-ish special effects! And it’s always a pleasure seeing the legend that is Michael Palin acting in a gentle comedy.

(On BBC/ iPlayer.)

I watched SEVERANCE wondering who directed it. Maybe a gifted graduate of nineties pop promos, somebody like Mark Romanek or Michel Gondry? And then it turns out to be… Ben Stiller! Some people are just too talented… ;-)

Great writing, great acting, fantastic music, stylish cinematography.

(Have only watched season one — incredible cliffhanger! On Apple TV.)

Michaela Coel puts everything out there, up on screen. A young auteur, expressing herself to the fullest. Her joy and her pain. She’s a fearless and charismatic actress, too.
